Your assumption about the Titan versus the Atwood coupler is correct. When the tow vehicle comes to a stop, the front of the coupler portion will swivel downward which compresses the actuator. The only differences between the Demco Trailer Coupler # DM14976-52 and # DM88XR are the colors and the mounting bracket design.

I recommend using the Fastway Universal Coupler Lock, part # FA86-0015-316, because it can mount on 1-7/8, 2 and 2-5/16 inch couplers and it fits on a wide variety of coupler types.
